McKinney Relay for Life Frequently Asked Questions
(FAQ's)
Relay Event FAQ's | Team Captain FAQ's
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide
community- based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer
as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing
suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
How many members can be on a team?
We recommend 10, as it is easier to
distribute the fundraising and walking schedule while keeping the coordination
manageable. However, the final
number is really what works best for you. If
your team reaches 16 or more, we will break them up on “paper only” for
administration purposes (i.e. t-shirt ordering, additional campsites, etc.)
What can I do to make my job as a team
captain easier?
Attend all team captain meetings and read
all relay newsletters.
-
Be informed.
-
Be patient.
-
Keep you team informed.
What can I do to make bank night easy?
The top
recommendations from some of our most successful team captains are to:
-
Have one person volunteer to collect
all the funds.
-
The total amount brought should
itemized by each team member, so that we can easily determine the amount
of funds raised by each team member.
-
Ensure final total matches the
monies brought in
-
Take coins to a coin counter and keep
the receipt. This is much
easier than rolling coins at bank night.
-
Fill out Cancer Fact Sign Forms and
attach monies
-
Have Employee Matching Funds Forms
attached with monies
What is
the #1 way to raise funds?
The number one way to raise funds is by
mailing or emailing a simple request letter to all addresses in your address
book. A generic letter can be
obtained from the Team Captain Coordinator however a personalized letter is
best. Also, we will be implementing
our first year of on-line donations via a website.
This will be a great way for you to email your friends and family to
raise funds and they can donate using a credit card.
What is the best way to jump-start our
fundraising?
Select your team members now and
brainstorm fundraising ideas immediately. Great
team members and fundraising ideas go fast.
Start fundraising as soon as
possible so that the goal is met early.
Then as the Relay nears you can enjoy planning your campsite and
entertaining games.
How do I recruit a team?
Identify a group you associate frequently
with and ask them to join you. I.e.
church group, sporting team, neighbors, co-workers, bunco or another social
club. Ask each friend to bring a
friend. Emphasize that this isn’t
an “athletic” event and team members don’t have to literally walk all
night.
Do team members have to stay at the event
all night?
Absolutely not, but they sure would miss
out on a lot of fun and meeting truly wonderful people.
By staying they will demonstrate their commitment to a cure.
What is the theme? Do we need to
decorate/plan activities according to the theme?
The
only theme is a fun-filled overnight event designed to
celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs for your
American Cancer Society. Create a
campsite that motivates your team and is truly unique to your team’s
personality. Fun ideas in the past
were ”Warriors for a Cure”, “Fishing for a Cure” or “Team Survivor”.
How do I get a copy of the video to help
recruit team members?
The recruitment video can be viewed on the
American Cancer Society website at http://www.cancer.org/docroot/GI/gi_1.asp
or contact the Team Captain Coordinator.
How big are the campsites?
The campsites are 15’ X 15’.
Can we do on-site fundraising and what
are the guidelines?
Yes, please contact the team captain
coordinator.
